The 27 Club is a pop culture phenomenon, a weird curse, or a statistical anomaly. Excess and tragedy are the stuff of music legends, but it is only retrospectively that deeper patterns emerge. None of these is more striking than the deaths at age 27 of some of the greatest musicians of our time, Janis Joplin being one of them.
Deconstructing Janis will take you on a journey through the turbulent and chaotic life of the legendary queen of rock. As a child, she was an outcast, an “ugly duckling”, then her creative but troubled genius catapulted her to fame before she passed away from a heroin overdose. She devoured everything the rock scene had to offer in a fatal attempt to make peace with herself and her era.
Both, the simple, the private, as well as the super-glitz stage persona (“Janis Joplin in a box”, she called it) will make this a musical and visual evening of extreme contrasts, as was Janis’ life.
Starting from the idea of the character that any performer (musician or actor) creates on stage, Nickel Bösenberg enters a physical and emotional state of “reincarnation” and “destruction” of Janis Joplin and, ultimately, himself. The cross-dressing or gender-bender enforces the discrepancy between the private and the public, the self and the stage. This opposition is eventually deconstructed because the limits between the private and the public can never be clearly separated. This, the singer most probably realized, and the actor will find out as well.
The 27 Club: Deconstructing Janis is performed as a double-bill in conjunction with Weird Scenes Inside THE Gold Mine at the Théâtre des Capucins on the same days at 19.00.
